Employee capacity and burnout
Burnout is exhaustion that does not clear after time off. Capacity is what people have available to do their work and keep doing it.
When capacity runs low for long enough, the result can be burnout. Capacity is the earlier measure.
How they differ
| Capacity | Burnout | |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | What people have available | The state of being worn down |
| When it shows | Before strain becomes visible | After |
| What it is used for | Deciding where the work needs to change | Describing a problem that has already happened |
What the research reports
In a study of 7,973 employees aged 19 to 65, people who did about 26 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity plus 30 to 60 minutes of light activity a day had the lowest odds of burnout, about 62% lower than the comparison group (Kim et al., Journal of Affective Disorders, 2025). The study measured people at one point in time, so it shows an association. It does not show that activity prevents burnout in any one person, and burnout has causes in the work as well as in the person.
What a team can change
Most of what an employer controls sits in the working week: competing priorities, interruptions, meeting load, and whether busy stretches come with a break. A capacity result shows which of these a team is carrying.
What this site does not do
It does not diagnose burnout, and neither does a capacity survey. Burnout is a clinical question for a professional.

Questions
Is low capacity the same as burnout?
No. Low capacity is a warning that the work asks more than people have. Burnout is what long-running strain can become.
Can capacity be measured before burnout appears?
Yes. That is the reason to measure it.
